Why Are We Doing This?

A few comments over the past 2 weeks have raised questions about the importance of learning about these new technologies. Now is good time to revisit that question. Thomas Frey, the Executive Director of the DaVinci Institute, has written a piece about how social trends will change the mission and purpose of libraries. The purpose of this project is to introduce some of the technology that is a result of those trends, to encourage you to engage in a process of change, and to consider the possibilities for libraries and how we interact with our communities.

So perhaps I should contemplate becoming a Rhinolibrarian (one specializing in identifying smells?) Seriously, I am interested in the library as a cultural center, though am not ready for band practice rooms yet (unless there are soundproof rooms!)

Sherry,
What a lovely idea, a scent library. Would that make you a smellologist?

There are libraries with soundproof rooms for listening to music and watching DVDs. Me... I'd like to put the public computers in a soundproof room, so I don't have to listen to the teens singing off key! :)

The library must change to meet the new world of information and culture! The internet is the best place to do this and eventhough I don't like things like MySpace...I can see the use of blogs!

How fascinating... I particularly liked the trend that people are becoming more mobile. I think it's a much better way for us to grow intellectually, not to be bogged down by material things and clutter.

This is a very interesting way to have a discussion with colleagues that work in so many different locations.

I'm not sure where I'm going on this but hopefully I will be able to learn a lot and use it at home and at work. I'm not the most computer literate person in the world. An understatement if there ever was one.

Why are we doing this? Because if people see that we know what the heck they are talking about when they ask for this or that, we'll actually look credible to them!

This is great -- some of these I already know, some are new to me. I will have fun playing with these resources. Thanks!

I just went thru Flickr. I believe one of my staff members uses this one or one like if to document her marathon trips. A great and convenient way to share her experiences.

If people start using tags as a matter of course as in the Folksonomies site, they come to appreciate libraries and our long standing tradition and procedure or organizing information!. HA!

I think YouTube is a great site. YouTube has some really hilarious videos about the presidential elections.

The bookmarks on DELICIOUS were not that great. YouTube was the best one of all the bookmarks on that site.

Here's another of my blog posts. Check out Ridgecrest Branch Library on Facebook! Our OSA Rhonda keeps up the branch's My Space page.
